The name Pistons comes not from the Detroit auto industry... but from the manufacturing heyday of Fort Wayne, Indiana. But with more fortunes calling, owner Fred Zollner moved these Fort Wayne Pistons to Detroit in 1957.

And for the first several years of its existence, the Detroit franchise used some form of the Fort Wayne-founded
"Piston Man" as a non-uniform logo.
